for the love of...

For the love of my family...

And a good time was had by all - well, at least by me. We were lucky enough to have all 3 of my kids, one fiance, one boyfriend and my sister & brother in law spend Christmas Eve with us. We shared a beautiful church service, loads of  fat free food (OK, it was Christmas I can wish), gave and received some great presents, and laughed til we cried playing games. It was awesome!!!

I truly hope that whoever has taken the time to read this is having (or has had) a wonderful holiday season as well, whatever holiday you celebrate.

Now to close out the year I am celebrating one more thing:

For the love of aqua...

I was lucky enough to have my aqua submission chosen by Stampington to be included in the January/February 2013 issue of Somerset Studio. My aqua project made the Melange section for which I am so grateful. Thank you Christen Olivarez and the entire Stampington group!
For the love of new beginnings...
With the new year fast approaching I hope for you a new year filled with all the things that make you happy - may they fill your heart and your life.
Happy Holidays,

Holiday Greetings

Winter is here in Minnesota full force. Lots of snow on the ground, freezing temps, and a husband happily ice fishing (or so he says yet I've only had fresh fish once so far).

I am trying to get into the Christmas spirit however am finding it difficult this year. I did manage to get the artwork done for our Christmas cards this year. Now let's see if I actually get them printed and in the mail!

Aside from working on the Christmas spirit I do have a little news to share. My "For the Love of Aqua" submission will be published in the January/February issue of Somerset Studio so I'm pretty excited for that.
I guess I will spend a little time this evening doing some online Christmas shopping. Thanks for stopping by...

hooked on faces

Some people get 'hooked on phonics', I am currently 'hooked on faces'. And, I  am still really having fun with aquatones and pan pastels. So here are a few more faces from my composition book journal that I've been working on...

Christmas cookie baking will take precedence over art this weekend so I have to play while i can! Also I see The Tin Goat is getting close to 100 followers - I feel a give away coming on...

it's been a rough week

I spent a little time in my art room today and played with my graphite pencils and a couple new pan pastel colors.

It's been a rough week...

On Black Friday we went out to the mall and people watched. We weren't crazy enough to try to get any real shopping done but it was kind of fun to watch everyone running around. We did score some salt water taffy though. As we were going through Target I popped a piece of taffy in my mouth and ended up ripping the crown off a molar.

Tuesday I screwed up my courage to go to the dentist and turns out I need some extensive dental work done - it was not a good day!

Then as I was putting up Christmas decorations yesterday I came across my Mom's Christmas stocking and it made me sad. She always spent the holiday week at our house with us. This will be my first Christmas without her in 53 years.

In addition to that I am job hunting and the first 2 places I tried aren't hiring so my art today is a little solemn feeling...

Still working in my composition book journal so the pages are ripply and the rule lines show and it doesn't bother me a bit.
Thanks for stopping by...

good intentions

I'm just a fool whose intentions are good... I'll be singing that song the rest of the evening now!

What I really meant with that title however is that "intentions" was my 'word' for this year, my goal. I was going to set my goals and share them with the universe and watch them unfold. Seriously, getting myself to set any kind of a goal is a major feat in itself!

After talking with my friend, Roc a few days ago about our intentions or affirmations I was inspired to make this journal spread.

For the remainder of this year I will remember to state my intentions and challenge you to do the same.

                    1. Say it

                    2. Repeat it

                    3. Believe it

Thanks for stopping by.

Multi-challenge journal page

I'm still working on my ETC journal spreads and have actually made some pretty big dents in the piles. A few pages to go and my counter will be clutter-free and I can start all over again!

Meanwhile being the first of the month there is a new Green Paper challenge. Mary gave us great images to work with once again this month. This challenge is open to all - join us here.

In addition to the Green Paper challenge there are also new monthly challenges over at Community Thrive. This month's One Word challege prompt is "strength". Join this Community Thrive challenge here.

I chose to combine the 2 challenges with a picture of one of my favorite people on a page in my altered ancestor journal.

Altered Grandma
All of the background papers except the sheet music and the striped border are from the Green Paper challenge.
Her dress says "She was strong" and with text taken from an old church hymnal.
The woman is my husband's grandmother in her youth. Grandma passed away 3 years ago just a few hours away from her 100th birthday.
I chose to use her picture for the strength challenge because I had so much respect for the way she lived her life. She found her strength in the Bible and shared her knowledge and her quest to learn more with everyone she met - as well as a few people she never met. She once spent 20 minutes on the phone with a 'nice sounding young man' that called to sell her car insurance (she hadn't driven in over 10 years at this point) telling him about Jesus.
Grandma was one of the least judgemental people I've had the pleasure to know and I could go on and on touting her various 'strenths' but I guess I've made my point by this time.
I hope to see you join either (or both) of these challenges and many thanks to those who offer them.
Find your strength.

ETC journal pages

I have a long, beautiful counter space in my art room that I just love. I can have several projects in various stages of completion at any given time and have room to spare. However, when you have all this space sometimes it's just more area for the clutter to accumulate!

I decided a few days ago that I was going to make some ETC (Eliminate The Clutter) journal pages. The only rule for my ETC pages are that the majority of the page has to be from all the excess papers and images laying on my counter.

This is the first spread I've completed.

"each has to enter the nest made by the other imperfect birds" rumi
All of the background papers were left over from other pieces. The face, tree  and butterfly were in a pile of extras from ATC trades that I've been saving for just the right piece. The hanging bird nest is K & Company and the bottom right was stamped on muslin and colored with spray wash and marker.
I barely made a dent in the piles on my counter so I will be coming up with ETC pages for quite some time!
Thanks for stopping by.

the spread has 2 faces

This is an art journal spread from yesterday.

I painted the face on the right and the small face on the left was an extra that I received with an ATC trade or happy mail somewhere along the line that I've been saving it for just the right page.
So happy to have my muse back!

slowly coming around

My vacationing muse is slowly coming back around. This is a spread in a Composition Book Journal. It was inspired by a waatching a video from Roberta Laliberte that I watched on the site.

I'm hoping the muse will hang around for awhile now!
Thanks for stopping by - stay warm and cozy.

Autumn Junque

Fall is upon us. The mornings are frost-covered and chilly. The gardens have all died down. And, as much as I hate to admit it I did turn the furnace on last week! There's no fighting it so might as well just get on with it.

Marsha from Tumble Fish Studio has come out with a new kit that makes it easier to focus on something more fun than the weather.

These are 2 (cut & paste) journal pages using images from the new "Autumn Junque" kit available at

I hope you are having a lovely autumn - thanks for stopping by.

October Green Paper Challenge

I've been busy painting and redecorating bedrooms so haven't spent much time in my art room in over a week and needed a little kickstart for my muse. This month's green paper challenge proved to be just the thing!

This is my mom's confirmation picture along with the images from this month's challenge.

Happy Saturday

Off to play today but before I do here is Day 22

Have a great weekend

Friday, September 21, 2012

We are in the process of giving our house a little facelift. When we moved here 3 years ago most of the main floor rooms were painted a pale minty green. They were fine and served well as a neutral background for all of our 'stuff''. Now however it's time for a change!

My new palette consists of turquoise, orange, taupe, green, and yellow with a splash of red.

My first project with the new palette was my attempt at an abstract. It looks nothing like it did in my mind but the colors work and it's growing on me. This is a 16 x 20" canvas called "fly if you are able".

Thank you to Glycerine at for your abstract class!
My next project was to upcycle an old cabinet and use it in the spare bedroom. Here are before and after pictures.
I'm such a bad photographer but if you lean your head to the side a little bit this will look level and if you squint just a tad the colors will appear more accurate!
The spare bedroom is painted taupe and Wade has the carpet torn out and most of the wood floor installed - stay tuned for progress reports!
Thanks for stopping by.

Friday, September 14th

What a beautiful, bright, crisp morning it is here! I have a few minutes before I have to head out the door for Crafts Direct so thought I'd quick post today's face for 29 faces.

She sort of reminds me of the old Parkay margarine TV commercials. "It's not nice to fool Mother Nature"! Anyway, she's the face of the day for me.
I also want to share a couple moleskine journal collage pieces I did using images from the new "Old Haunts" image kit from Tumble Fish Studio.
I call the first one "Along Came a Spider".
The kit is full of great Halloween images if you are so inclined and can be found at

For this second page I knew I wanted to use the vintage people picture. Other than that I sort of let the images take over and this is how it ended up. I may do another with these people a bit more on the darker side, will have to see if I have time.
Right now I can almost hear Crafts Direct calling my name.....
Thanks for stopping by.

Day 10, Face 10

Still trying to get a more masculine looking face. My men are always a little on the 'pretty' side. I still have 19 faces to go so will try another in a few days.
Thanks for looking.

Having a little fun mixing up the faces a bit. Here is number 9.

I hope you get to "mix it up" a bit this weekend and I hope it's a good one. Fall is in the air - enjoy...

Day 8

Just got home from our visit with the kids. Had a fun time with all of them and then had a great afternoon at Rock Bend Folk Festival. Bed is going to feel really good tonight!

This is face number 8. I thought I would try a man's face this time however it didn't really turn out very masucline so I'm calling him Pat!

Thanks for stopping by.
